- Walter has a twin sister, Cecelia Condit who lives in Milwaukee, WI and is the same age as he is. She is a graduate professor at the University of Wisconsin specializing in photographic and video art. She also writes songs and music. This lady is quite impressive. You must visit her website at:
https://sites.google.com/site/ceceliacondit/.
On her website watch her video commemorating the life of her mother, Annie L Hord, who was the daughter of Reverend Arnold Hord. She also has her work on Youtube and at the New York Art museum. We plan to talk on the phone in the next few days. She is in the process of moving.
Anyway, Walter did not know as much about his grandfather's life as I do. He was very pleased to receive the biography and felt it was very accurate. He was only 3 years old when his grandfather died and his mother did not say that much about him. She did tell him that the throat surgery that forced him to resign from Saint Michael's church in 1914 substantially changed his personality. While he continued serving the Episcopal Church in some very substantial positions it was difficult for him to speak and hence, he became a fairly quiet person. Walter was aware that he curtailed his genealogy work after 1915 but he feels that his throat problem was a major reason for that too. The tragic death of his oldest son Frank was another event that weighed very hard on both Rev Arnold and his wife.
Reverend Arnold's wife, Annie Robb Firth's father was a very successful executive with the Pennsylvania Railroad who left her very well off. As a result Rev Arnold Hord and her were fairly wealthy people. They travelled a lot.
Reverend Arnold's brother became a medical doctor like his father who he was named after, William Taliaferro Hord. Early in his life he developed mental problems and had to be institutionalized which was another setback in the family. Walter said his mother spent several weeks a year visiting him. He never recovered.
He said that he and his wife had travelled to Caroline county a long time ago in search of Shady Grove but that they had no idea where it was and they only got as far as Port Royal. He knew nothing about it being taken over by Fort AP Hill. He is very pleased to hear that we had found it and was equally concerned about the cemeteries of which he was aware and asked to be kept informed about our findings.
He said he would try to find some family photos of Reverend Arnold but he thinks that his sister is the better source. He said he did not know who in the family got the window that Rev Hord removed from Shady Grove when he last visited in 1913 but he was given a framed piece of the glass from that window. He said he will send me a photograph of it.
Great conversation, I look forward to talking to his sister, Cecelia soon.
