    • SHELBY - Mrs. Valda Ree Hord, 89, of 118 Lattimore St., who also resided at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
      A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Arbath and Lonnie Reid Avery. She worked for the Dover Group for more than 20 years and was a nurse at both Shelby and Kings Mountain hospitals.
      In addition to her parents, her husband, Loron Sloan "Bony" Hord, preceded her in death.
      She is survived by two sons, Jim Hord and special friend, Sandra, of Candler, and Steve Hord and wife, Evelyn, of Winston-Salem; a sister, Nadine Royal of Alabama; eight grandchildren, Cathy Williams, Donna Morales, Loron Sloan Hord II, Ann Ward, Sonya Banks, Frank Alley, Matthew Hord and Allison Tuttle; 13 great grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews.
      The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Cleveland Pines and the staff, to her cousin, Henry Horne, and to her special cousin and caretaker for six years, Iris Maloney, for all of their special love and excellent care. The family would also like to extend a special "thank you" to Dr. Charles and Macie Hayek for treating Mrs. Hord as a part of their family. The Hayek children, Andy, Meredith and Luke, appreciated Mrs. Hord as if she were their own grandmother.
      Funeral: Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel in Shelby
      Visitation: The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2 p.m. before the service.
