Marshall Cecil Abee passed away peacefully after a brief illness Thursday afternoon September 11th, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, September 15, 2014 at First Baptist Church.
He was born on January 1st, 1928 in Hickory to Marshall Cecil and Marie Lail Abee. After graduating from Hickory High School, he joined the Army in January, 1946 training at bases across the country. He and fellow soldiers played in an Army football league where he received an Army All American award. After his service, using the GI Bill, he attended Lenoir Rhyne College where he was a four year letterman. After graduation and marriage to Phyllis in 1953, he taught school and coached high school football in Spencer. Soon the couple moved to Chapel Hill where he received a Master's Degree in public health from UNC. As a health educator and administrator he worked in Miami, Pittsburgh, Winston-Salem, and for many years as Director of Community Health Services in Greensboro. Marshall had a late second career in sales with Westover Products in commercial roofing and traveled the Southeast into his seventies. Always a volunteer, he coached city league football, served in many leadership roles with the Boy Scouts, painted houses with Habitat For Humanity, delivered food for Meals on Wheels, and remained an active member of his loving neighborhood. Marshall spent these last years as a patient caregiver of his wife of 63 years, Phyllis. Together they enjoyed the fellowship of First Baptist Church, traveling with family, and keeping up with their grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Kerr Abee of the home, his sons and daughters in law Mark Abee and Julie Woodward of Greensboro, Steve and Susan Abee of Tobaccoville, Scott and Marie Abee of Raleigh, and eight grandchildren: Griffin, Graham, Rochelle, Clayton, Eli, Clif, Reese, and Oksana.
The family thanks all that sent their love, and requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, 5970 Fairview Rd. Suite 217, Charlotte, NC 28210.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Church Atrium of First Baptist.
