- Samuel James Abernethy, s/o Jane Robb and Joseph Abernethy, was born October 5, 1871. He and his brother, George, attended school on the 5th Line at S.S. No. 6. Samuel went on to school at Bradford and Owen Sound becoming a teacher at S.S. No.6 for some four years. teacher He put on the fire, cleaned the school, and all for $300.00 a year. It was while teaching here that the Tottenham fire of 1895 occurred.
When Cross's school, S.S. No. 10, offered him $75.00 more in 1897, he taught there for three years.
It was while he was teaching at Cross's school that his mother was sick in the Toronto General Hospital. On Friday nights after school he rode his bicycle to Toronto, slept in a livery barn over night, spent Saturday with his mother, and then rode back to Tottenham ready to teach school on Monday morning. At that time the roads were either clay or gravel.
In 1900, because the chalk bothered his asthma, he rented a farm on the 7th Line, Lot 5. In 1902 he married Rachael Ann Holmes of Mono Township, Ontario. Robert Wilson brought them by cutter to the CPR in Beeton to go to Toronto for their honeymoon. They had 5 children: Leonard, Sadie, Weldon, George and Olive.
In 1921 he bought S ½ Lot 4, Con 6, from Mr. Joseph Heenan, who had the misfortune of losing his house through fire.
Within the next year or so he became an auditor for the township, a position he held until 1926 when he was asked to be Tax Collector. This involved a great deal of work as the tax bills had to be delivered personally and not through the mail. He held this job for many years as well as secretary-treasurer for Hammell's No. 9 school.
In 1941 he bought a house in Tottenham on Alexander Street.
In 1948 his wife died and in 1950 Samuel died. They are both buried in the family plot in Mount Tegart Cemetery.
